Free to Learn (P. Gray)

What does learning look like when it’s truly natural?

In Free to Learn, psychologist Peter Gray questions much of what we assume about education. He suggests that humans are biologically wired to learn through curiosity, exploration—and most importantly—play. Play is not a distraction. It is the ground where creativity, social intelligence, emotional resilience, and independent thinking grow.

And honestly—why should this be true only for children?

Mental state of play: Flow

“The mental state of play is what some researchers call “flow.” Attention is attuned to the activity itself, and there is reduced consciousness of self and time. The mind is wrapped up in the ideas, rules, and actions of the game and relatively impervious to outside distractions. Many researchers who do not consider themselves to be studying play have described this state of mind as the ideal state for learning and creativity. In my mind, they are studying play.” (From the book)
